Bronze duty, no applause

Helm

The harbor’s least conversational shift supervisor.

Helm, a bronze ship's wheel with a crested helmet at its center

Keeps The Wheel

Helm is the bronze sentry assigned to the harbor wheel. It does not captain the ship, give speeches, or tolerate decorative knots. When weather arrives, Helm squares the spokes, checks the channel, and lets everyone else discover that panic is optional. The watch ends only when the ropes are dry and the wheel is exactly where it started.

The Daily Bearing

A proper watch has five turns. None are dramatic. That is why the boats return with all their edges attached.

  1. First Bell

The call sign is $HELM; roll call precedes the gulls.

  2. Harbor Check

Every rope is judged; most receive a quiet nod.

  3. Midday Hold

The wheel stays centered while lunch drifts past.

  4. Fog Turn

One measured correction keeps the channel honest.

  5. Last Mooring

Bronze faces outward until the final knot is set.

Steady hands outlast loud seas.
